Element A Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.
Reasoning Statement: Artifact 1 and 2 are examples that demonstrate my knowledge of Colorado Academic Standards in Music Education as well as my awareness of the individual needs of my students. My role as a teacher candidate was to create appropriate lessons plans for various grade levels (K-12). The lesson plan for High School choir demonstrates how I use standards to create inquiry and essential questions, which can help high school students engage in critical thinking, thus deepening their understanding of the concepts. The combination of the two lesson plans demonstrate my range of ability to appropriately incorporate music education state standards for each grade level (K-12).

Element B Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices.
Reasoning Statement: The artifacts below include a lesson plan, 2 teaching videos, and a historical write up that I wrote. The artifacts demonstrate my ability to connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines including literacy and history. My role as a teacher candidate was to create lesson plans that emphasized rhythm. For the other artifact, my role was to provide historical context for an audience, thus giving the piece more meaning. The lesson plan demonstrates how I incorporated literacy by using the story, Tikki-Tikki-Temboby Arlene Mosel, to emphasize the tikka-tikka (16th note) rhythm. The second artifact is a teaching video in which I use literacy and the story telling element to help students further engage with the song Our Old Sow and concept Tam-Ti (dotted quarter + 8th note). The 3rd artifact is an example of how I incorporated literacy standards in 2nd grade. I asked the students to come up with a list of items people might find at a market. 1 of the words had to be a 4 syllable words in preparation for the rhythm (tikka-tikka). The fourth artifact is a historical description of the piece Skye Boat Song.

Element C Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.
Reasoning Statement: I included 3 artifacts demonstrating my knowledge of content, concepts, inquiry, and evidence-based instructional practices. Artifact 1 is a picture of feedback from my mentor teacher. This was given to me after I taught a second grade lesson. Artifact 1 shows my ability to create and define clear objectives based on my knowledge in music pedagogy. Artifact 1 also demonstrates my ability to align activities. For artifact 1, my role as an educator was to review a new pitch (re) and to keep students on target for meeting grade level state music education standards. Artifact 2 and 3 are projects I did in graduate level music education classes and were not completed during this semester. However, I feel that artifact 2 and 3 are substantial in demonstrating my knowledge of content. Artifact 2 is a mock Middle School Composition Curriculum that demonstrates my ability to align my philosophy, evidence-based instructional practices and theories, and hard and soft policies, into a curriculum with appropriate activities and assessments. Artifact 3 is a Database tracker that I and a colleague co-created. The tracker was used to find commonalities, such as theories of origin, cited sources, keywords, and frameworks, in articles within the Music Educators Journal from 2017 to 2019. The Database shows that I have a deepened understanding of my content area, commonalities within research, and source material behind research.

Quality Standard 1 Reflection
For this quality standard, I grew in several areas and saw how this affected my teaching and the students' learning. I became more comfortable creating detailed lesson plans that included standards, assessment, and inquiry questions. Additionally, I became intentional about implementing literacy and mathematical standards, as well other subject standards. For example I implemented the literacy standard by using story telling as demonstrated by artifact 2 in element B . As I became more comfortable in creating lesson plans using state standards, I became better at identifying and scaffolding students knowledge towards long term objectives. When I incorporated historical elements my students were more engaged in the lesson. Additionally, when I incorporated literacy students, the students rhythm improved and they were more interested in the activities. This is because I was connecting familiar concepts, i.e. words with syllables as demonstrated in artifact 3 element B, to unfamiliar concepts such as rhythm.
My goal for this element is to create a long-term detailed curriculum for each grade level. This will help so that my lessons, activities, and assessments correspond to my long term objectives within each curriculum.
