EDUC 450 Introduction
I am a masters plus licensure student in music education. I want to use music as a vessel to empower students, help provide a sense of community, and facilitate students discovering their own identities. I believe that using Bennett Reimer's "Universalist Philosophy," will help me to draw out the core components of my philosophy.
In EDUC 450 we covered the Colorado State Department of Education Teacher Education Standards. In this course we examined the following elements: Professionalism, Planning, Instructional Strategies for Teaching, Classroom Management, and Standards and Assessment. We examined several books including Making Thinking Visible, Champs, and Love and Logic. Making Thinking Visible explored a variety of teaching activities or strategies that can be applicable to any content area. Using classroom management techniques from the books Champs and Love and Logic, we specifically examined ways to create clear expectations, the use of specific feedback and praise, ways to establish consequences, the importance of consistency, empathy, and offering help or resources for students struggling to succeed.
For the EDUC 450 practicum requirement, I spent my time in a choral classroom. I spent time observing the teacher using the techniques and strategies we learned about in the book. Additionally, I was able put the methods I learned in EDUC 450 into practice with multiple lessons that I taught throughout the semester.
