I am excited to share what I have completed and what I will be working on in 2018!
This semester I started writing five brand-new pieces which include:
Side Note- I wrote O Sweet Everlasting Voices for my practicum students, partly as a way of saying thank you. When I heard the students sing Lullaby by Daniel Elder at their concert, with so much passion and intensity, I knew that I wanted to write a piece for them that was similar. I spent time looking for a text and finally came across this one. I fell in love with the text. Translating speech into song, I was able to come up with a simple, yet nostalgically haunting motif. Shortly after, the piece came together. I am excited about this piece because I explored using a chromatic harmonic language at the ends of phrases that always resolves back to the home key and creating phrases that differ in length. In addition, I tried to incorporate the full range of the piano, and wrote a simplistic piano accompaniment that is interesting yet stays out of the way of the choir. I am eager to continue my symphonic wind ensemble pieces. Already, I learned about instrument doublings, and was offered ways to think about silence being decorated with percussion. Cheers until the next blog! |
