ECUC 350 Introduction
I am currently attending Colorado State University for a masters degree in music education with licensure. As a music educator my goals are to provide my students with an enriching music education, empower my students, and create a sense of community for my students. I plan to provide my students with an enriching music education by allowing my students to listen to a variety of music, meet musicians, and attend or play at events in and outside of the community. I will create a sense of community for my students by creating a positive classroom environment in which students can collaborate and feel safe to create and express themselves. My students will feel empowered because, I will create leadership opportunities for my students so that I can point out and recognize each student's unique attributes. I will also empower my students by maintaining high expectations for my students to achieve academic challenges set before them.
In EDUC 350 our class covered personal beliefs about education and the role of teachers, expectations for what our classrooms should look and sound like, empowering students, rules and routines, data and classroom management, integrated services and gifted and talented, and lesson planning. In EDUC 350 we covered the books Empower by A.J. Juliani and John Spencer, and Teach Like A Champion by Doug Lemov. The book Empower covered techniques to create choices to help students take ownership of their own learning. The book Teach Like A Champion included specific techniques to engage students and help them learn while keeping the classroom positive and safe for students to explore. Furthermore, I spent time in a choir classroom and in integrated services where I was able to watch some of the techniques, from the resources, employed in classrooms. EDUC 350 helped me develop my philosophy and create new goals for myself as an educator.
